You got saved in Calvary
I got saved in
About 4 years before I got saved, I was preparing for a sociology exam from a book that ridiculed any belief in God, when a thought passed through my head: “The meaning of life must be to find God.” OK, but where can I find Him and which religion is the true one? I decided to look into it by reading and trying out anything I could find (and what was available at the time), and I thought I would pick out from each one what I liked. I mostly stumbled upon eastern religions and such spirituality - I practiced yoga, meditation, did mind-control, attended a few meetings of the Krishna people, devoured books but felt emptier and emptier. I really wanted to meet a real Christian too, because I was sure that if God existed then finding Him should affect my whole being and life and shouldn't only mean going to church on Sundays, which was the only version I saw around me.
How did God call you into full-time ministry?
After the long search my conversion was a radical turn. Right away I had a deep desire to serve Jesus with all of my being and every moment of my life. I found the truth and the answer to all of our problems in Him and I wanted to give Him to everybody. I plunged into everything that the church was doing, studied the Bible, talked about Jesus to everybody I met and occasionally prayed that God would call me to serve Him. In the meantime I was studying civil engineering.
About a year after I had got saved, they asked me at an outreach in Szeged if I would come to Hungary as a translator to help missionaries plant churches. After I had sought the Lord for three months about this and He had answered all of my questions that came up, I moved to Esztergom in the fall of 1992. This is how I became a missionary instead of an engineer practically as a baby Christian. At first I was mostly used as a translator but as I was growing in the Lord, He gave me more and more opportunities to serve in other capacities as well.
You served as a missionary in
I served in Radom, at a small Calvary Chapel from the summer of 2004 till May 2009. I had many good and blessed experiences and of course had to face hardships too that mostly originated in the fact that we saw very little fruit. But this drew our team closer to both the Lord and each other.
Most of our ministry – besides building the fellowship – consisted of building relationships in which we shared the gospel. Polish people are very friendly and they especially like Hungarians. As an Eastern Europian, moving there wasn't that big of a change for me since there are many similarities in both our history and mentality. When it comes to the language, God did a miracle in my case and I learnt Polish very quickly. He wanted to use me as a translator there too and since He can raise up sons for Abraham from the rocks, it was no problem for Him to make a Polish translator from a Hungarian.
This is why the language barrier has never hindered me in any ministry. The funny mistakes and misunderstandings rather originated in the fact that I wasn't born there and it took me quite a while to understand why the Poles do and say certain things. But this forced me to rely on the help of the Holy Spirit more. Since ministry usually bears fruit very slowly in Poland, I thought I would probably have to spend my whole life there in order to see more fruit and was more than willing to do that. This is partly why it took me so long to understand and process the fact that God was planning something else and was calling me back to Hungary.
As you’ve journeyed with God, what have been some of the most valuable things you’ve learnt? It is hard to choose. I practically grew up as a Christian in the ministry and God has never stopped emphasizing to me that my love relationship with Him is much more important to Him than my ministry, that He sees me not only as His servant but mostly as His daughter, and He loves me for who I am and not for what I do for Him. As far as ministry is concerned, He is mostly looking for faithfulness not results.
I must admit that I need Him to repeat these things to me over and over again. It took me a long time to learn to walk in the freedom of grace and enjoy it, so I can never get tired of it’s message. I've found that the Lord always has more to do in me than through me, and my job usually isn't to understand what He is doing but to trust Him and obey His Word today. When it comes to the future the only sure thing besides heaven is the fact that He will be with me. Therefore the only way I can prepare for any situation in the future is by learning to walk in the Spirit in the things concerning me today (this will be my job in the future too) and by getting to know the One who is with me today (and will be with me tomorrow).
Of course, one of His greatest blessings is the huge family He has placed us into. I have probably learnt most of the big lessons in my relationships with different people, but I won't start listing them. I love to walk with Jesus, getting to know Him, learning from Him, and I enjoy that He is always working on something in my life, even when I am not conscious of it. With Him everything has a meaning and a purpuse. The best thing is that He Himself is in it all – oftentimes with a lot of His children included – and when this life is over, Heaven awaits me!
What do you find the most rewarding about serving in a church?
It's definitely seeing that God is truly working according to His Word, and having an insight into what He is doing in people's lives. It is a huge privilege and joy that I get to take part in it and in the meantime am growing as well.
