interview with Ed and Zsuza Berg

Here Ed and Zsuzsa talk about the ministry and their calling to it.

Your ministry is about saving the lives of babies. How did you decide to get involved in this work?
We received a vision for the work in 1998 when we were in Israel on our honeymoon. After 5 weeks of our honeymoon we started looking around to see how we could be a blessing to the Jewish people. We started working for a Christian Coffee Shop in the Old City of Jerusalem.

After three months we came in contact with a Messianic Pro-life group Bead Haim. Through attending their prayer meetings, street outreaches, reading leaflets and seeing videos, God started to touch our hearts. Then in order to renew our visas, we needed to go to Cyprus. It was our desire to start serving full time with Bead Haim when we returned to Jerusalem. But on our way to the ship that would take us to Cyprus, we were talking with the outreach leader of Bead Haim. He said that we really needed to be sure that we were called for this work. When he first started the Pro-life work he had asked for a sign. He had asked for one baby to be saved on his first street outreach (which consisted of giving out leaflets.) And behold, a girl who was on her way to have an abortion received a leaflet from him and changed her mind.

So I thought to myself - praise God for the saved baby. But what sign can I ask for in comparison to this? The Lord came to my help and one night when I couldn’t sleep during our stay in Cyprus, he spoke to me in a vision. I saw in the vision a pile of dead babies who had died as a result of abortion, before this pile I saw a man standing with a sign in his hand warning the people, the sign said “If you throw your baby on this pile, the wrath of God will come upon you.” I really felt God saying I was to be that man.

So after our return we started to work fulltime for Bead Haim. For the next 5 months we were doing street outreaches, and we attended the prayer meetings of the 4 crisis centers. By the grace of God we could see 5 babies saved. One girl had decided to keep her baby after reading a leaflet that she had found on the street that was thrown away by someone else.

After our return to Hungary we really got a shock to hear that 60- 70,000 abortions are taking place here every year, 43% of all conceived babies are aborted. So we started to look for ways in which we could make a difference. We did this by translating some of the Israeli leaflets, opening a help-line and eventually the Crisis Pregnancy Center which is now located near Deak tér.

What is the most important message you can give to a woman who is considering having an abortion?
Please do not have one. An abortion is a serious surgical intervention where many physical complications and long term emotional consequences can occur. The body of a pregnant woman is very much preparing itself for the delivery of a baby, so can you imagine what happens when this process is all of a sudden stopped.

Some of the physical complications can be: strong pain and bleeding during and after the abortion, never to be able to have children again, a greater sensitivity to sexual diseases, higher risk of breast cancer even, death in some cases.

Some of the long term emotional consequences include condemnation, guilt, depression which can lead to alcohol or drug abuse, breaking up of relationships, suicide, lack of sexual desire, child abuse and repeated abortions. Many of these emotional consequences can develop into a so-called post-abortion syndrome.

It is also not God’s will to have an abortion. In the Ten Commandments He forbids killing, He forbids time and time again the shedding of innocent blood – which we also can call abortion because it has the same spirit behind it. It was never in His mind for people to kill their newly born.

He wants to be the defender of the weak and the widow; he wants to plead for their case. Girls who are unwanted, pregnant, abandoned by their husbands or boyfriends, are widows in our eyes. Psalm 68:5: A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.

What do you think is the most important thing for a woman who has had an abortion in the past, to know and understand?
That there is healing and forgiveness available through the blood and redeeming work of Jesus Christ on the cross. This is though a process - to accept it and to make it a part of you. And a good start of this process is to come to one of our post abortion bible study groups. In such a group you learn that you are not the only one, and that through the word of God and prayer, healing will start to take place.

If you are interested in when and where the studies take place, please contact us.

How do you think you’ve grown as a couple, as you’ve worked together in this ministry?
We have learned to encourage and stand next to each other in times of difficulties and discouragements.

We pray many times together when we're faced with hard situations and we give thanks together when we see that God is in everything. We always make decisions together. The pro-life work is full of blessings and full of battles. We have learnt to accept both.

Your ministry is difficult, and there must often be heart-breaking moments. What helps you to persevere?
The knowledge that this is God's ministry and that the unborn and women in crisis pregnancy situations are very much on his heart.

The memory of holding a newly-born baby saved from abortion also greatly helps.

The knowledge that this country is slowly dying out. If the abortion and the negative birth rate continues at its current rate, the Hungarian population will be around 6 million by the year 2040, half of what it is today.

There is a story which goes like this:
After a big storm there were a lot of little starfish thrown on the beach, there were thousands of them. An old man was walking on the beach and he saw a young boy trying to throw back the fish into the sea. The old man walked up to the young boy and asked, "Why are you doing this? Do you think you can save the lives of all these fish?" The boy picked up another handful of fish and threw them back into the sea and answered, "I know I can't save the lives of all these fish, but at least I can save the lives of these fish that I throw back into the sea."

We have a choice, we can be like the old man or we can be like the little boy. The old man is saying, “How can you make a difference – there are so many babies being aborted?” The little boy is saying, “We probably can’t save all the babies that are going to be aborted here in Hungary, but if we start now we can at least make a difference for some of them”.

The daughter of the Pharaoh saved just one Jewish little baby and through this child (Moses) God worked in an enormous way.

There is a Jewish saying that says, “If you save a life, you have saved a whole generation”.

Please note that the names of people have been changed.

Kata

Kata is 22 and finished her high school in a Christian school. Now she is studying in a medical college. She has a boyfriend and she takes the pill, but 1 time she forgot to take it. She took a pregnancy test at home which turned out to be positive. The baby is about 3-4 weeks old.

She was very nervous when she first came into the center. She hasn't finished college, she lives in a rented room and she was afraid of what the people will say of her being pregnant. She knows everything about abortion because she learned about it in the school.

When we talked about the baby development and her alternatives, she realized that it is possible for her to get married with her boyfriend - his family can help them, and the great-grandfather and grandmothers would be happy. And she said that she trusts in God. We shared the gospel with her and she said that she wanted Jesus in her life. She was happy when we offered our prayer for her, her boyfriend and her baby.

Zsuzsi

Zsuzsi came to our office for the second time. The first time she had came, she was pregnant. She said that previously the doctors had told her that she wouldn't be able to have any more children, because she had had an operation and half of her womb had been taken out. So she was very surprised when she found out that she was pregnant, even the doctors couldn't believe it. This would be a miracle child.

She knew already the baby would be a boy, and his name would be Bendeguz. Her husband was also happy, and although they had financial difficulties, the baby would be very much loved. They believe in God, although hadn't been to church for some time.

Because Zsuzsi is 36 years old, the delivery of Bendeguz was very difficult. She already had two children, 10 and 15 years old, but this delivery was the most difficult.

Because of the financial difficulties, she asked our help for baby clothes, a bed and a baby carriage. We could help her with the baby carriage. We phoned her and the next day she came to our office with 5-weeks old little Bendeguz. He was such a cute boy.

Zsuzsi was really happy to get the baby carriage, but she also shared that the electric company had turned off their electricity because they couldn't pay the bill. They needed to pay about 60.000 Ft to have the electricity turned back on. They were using candles every night.

So again a little miracle happened in her life, because we tried to find some help for her, although it wasn't easy. Finally Baptist Aid promised to help her.

We pray for her and we ask God's help for her in all of her circumstances.

Andi

Andi is 37 years old, and she phoned about her pregnancy test, which she had taken two times by her self at home. Both times the lines were very light on the test, and she didn't know what this meant. I asked her to come to the Crisis Pregnancy Counseling Center, to do another free pregnancy test, and also to come and talk. She came and the test turned out positive. She is married and she has a 17 months old baby boy.

Andi wanted to go back to work soon, so she was very nervous. She did not know anything about abortions, so I explained the procedure and I also spoke about the physical and emotional consequences of having an abortion.

Andi believes in God, but she doesn't have a personal relationship with Him. I showed the baby development to her and we talked about this miracle, which is really a gift of God. She started to cry and said she didn't want to have an abortion; she didn't want to kill her baby. She wanted to go through the pregnancy and deliver the baby. Suddenly she stood up; and said that she had to run home to speak with her husband. Unfortunately she did not give us her phone number, but she took our brochure about baby development and abortion.

ways to help

ways to help:

pray

Prayer is the heart of our ministry, the motor that keeps it running.

You can join with us in prayer in the following ways:

  • Every Monday we have a prayer meeting at the center (Dist. 7, Asbóth street 22).
  • You can receive our prayer letter by e-mail, and maybe post it on you news bulletin. Please e-mail us at edbergs@freemail.hu to be a part of this.
  • You can organize your own prayer group that prays specifically for pro-life issues.

speak up

God wants us to “Rescue those being led away to death; hold back those staggering toward slaughter”.

One way is by speaking up. You can do this.

You can also invite us to your church, or we can organize a guest speaker to come and speak about pro-life issues from a biblical point of view.

financial support

The ministry has monthly bills, such as the rent, the employment of 1 staff member, and giving out of free material such as leaflets and pregnancy tests.

volunteer

The center is run by Christian volunteers who come from various churches.

We are looking for people who can volunteer on a part-time or full-time basis, from as little as 2 hours a week. All suitable volunteers will receive training.
